SHINee (샤이니) is a contemporary South Korean boy group under SM Entertainment. The group debuted in 2008 with five members: Onew (온유), Jonghyun (종현), Key (키), Minho (민호) and Taemin (태민). Being a contemporary group, they take the lead in music, dance and fashion that fits the current TREND. Their very first music video and single was “누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay)” or “Noona Neomu Yeppeo” also known as “replay” and it became an instant hit among many noonas across the nation. Their name “SHINee” is a play on the word “shine”, to be interpreted as “the one who is in light.” Or in this case, the light means the spotlight, reflecting the team’s aspirations to attract a wide range of fans by pursuing different types of music, regardless of the generation.
On May 25, 2008, SHINee debuted on SBS’s Inkigayo with their promotional single, “Noona Neomu Yeppeo (Replay)” (“누난 너무 예뻐 Replay”).
On June 22, 2011, SHINee made their Japanese Debut with the Japanese version of their single, Replay. They gained the title, "The artist who MANAGED to get in top 3 for 3 continuous releases since debut," for the foreign artist category. Such an achievement had never been gained by anyone else ever since the single ranking chart was established 45 years ago, in January 1968, followed by their first Japanese studio album, The First on December 7, 2011.
