Why is there Taiwan and China?
So let me bring you to the 20th century. In 1911, a man called Sun Yat Sen held an uprising and overthrew the Qing Dynasty. He established a new country called Republic of China, which was a democratic country leaded by Kuomintang. After some time, some Chinese like Mao Zedong influenced by the Soviet founded the Communist Party. These two parties broke out a civil war and fought hard.
In 1948, Kuomintang was beaten by the Communists and retreated to Taiwan Island. The Communist instead founded a new country called People Republic of China, a communist country.
After settling down, Kuomintang rebuilt in Taipei and settled down. These two parties both claim that they control the whole China( Something like NK and SK) . In 1970s, A lot of great powers such as US and UK changed their stance to recgonize the Communist government as China and stopped diplomatic relations with Kuomintang.Due to this reasons, Republic of China ( Taiwan) chose to withdraw from UN.
To difference themselves from the Communist government, Taiwan is used more often than ROC.
So why Tzuyu holding a Taiwan flag is such controversial
In the 1990s, the opposition have been calling for Taiwan independence from China which many people support. However the Mainland government has always treated Taiwan as an unseperable part and do not leave any chance for independence. So Mainland netizens who saw Tzuyu holding a ROK flag was furious and bashed her.
After that, a Taiwanese named Huang An who is pro-unification bashed Tzuyu for being pro-independence which kinda lit things up.
Is there a chance that Tzuyu doesn't know about these political things
No chance at all. This is kinda basic knowledge for Taiwanese. It is like South Koreans know that they fight with NK.
Why do Taiwanese hated been called China-Taiwan
Imagine that a North Korea TV station invited SNSD on their performance and labeled them a North Korea-Seoul.
Sorry if i get kinda serious
